Is water leaking out of your Shower?

Any leak from your shower can be an issue. Sure, you can mop it up but after a few days of doing so the leak is going to drive you crazy. Plus, you don’t want to risk the chance of a leak causing further damage.

One of the most common places to experience a leak from your shower is your shower screen, so let’s take a look at a few tips on how you might be able to fix the issue and get back to enjoying your shower.

Tips for fixing a leaking shower screen

Before you can fix your leaking shower screen, you have to identify the problem area. Common reasons for a shower screen to leak include:

Issues with the caulking

Issues with the caulking, or the material that is used to seal between your shower screen and the walls and floor.

If you have a new shower screen and you notice water escaping under or beside the frame or glass, it’s likely the caulking wasn’t installed correctly.

If it’s a few years old, it could simply mean that the caulking needs to be re-done. As a general rule, the caulking should last around five years.

Perished Rubber Strip

Many shower screens have a rubber seal or strip between the panels or between a panel and the floor.

These can cause leakages so are worth checking if you think your shower has a leak.

Issues can be caused by incorrect installation or simply because the seal or strip needs to be replaced.

Misalignment

Misalignment of shower screen panels is a common issue with older-style sliding shower screens but is still possible in newer installs.

Blocked Drain Hole

Shower screens are designed to prevent water splashing out of your shower, not necessarily to withstand a flooded shower caused by a blocked drain hole. The solution to this is pretty simple: unclog the drain hole.

Get the leak repaired promptly

When it comes to fixing the actual cause of the leak, you might be able to do the work yourself if you have reasonable do-it-yourself skills or you may need a Glazier to fix it for you.

Either way, make sure you get the leak fixed reasonably quickly. Over time, a leaking shower screen that isn’t fixed can lead to damage to skirting boards, timber vanity units, plasterboard and even sub-surface materials if your waterproofing isn’t up to scratch.

A leak that could cost only a few dollars and a little elbow grease to fix could end up costing you hundreds and even thousands of dollars.
