Whether you’ve just finished a complete bathroom renovation on your Adelaide home, or simply replaced the shower screens, one of the first things you’ll notice in the coming weeks is how much cleaner the glass is compared to your old screens. The big question is, how can you keep it that way?

While it’s not unusual for glass shower screens to get a little mouldy, scummy and cloudy, with a little care you can keep your shower screen looking virtually brand new for many years. Here are our top tips.

Keep your shower screens looking brand new

1. Ventilate your Adelaide bathroom

The first tip doesn’t require any work at all, it simply involves opening a window. Ventilation can help keep your shower screen glass dry, which means there’s less opportunity for mould to take hold. If you don’t have a window or other ventilation means, make sure you run your exhaust fan for at least several minutes after each shower.

2. Use natural products

It’s tempting to use a commercial product to clean your glass shower screens, but you don’t need to. Not only do natural products do just as good a job, they’re also healthier for you and the environment plus they won’t damage your screens.

For example, you could simply add dishwashing detergent to water and use a soft cloth to give your glass shower screens – and the rest of your shower – a good clean. Rinse well afterwards. Other options include undiluted lemon juice, baking soda with a bit of water added to make a paste, or a 50/50 mix of white vinegar and water.

Regular cleaning will prevent your shower screen from getting this grubby.

3. Clean your Adelaide glass shower screens regularly

One of the keys to keeping your glass shower screens looking brand new is to clean them regularly. This will get rid of mould, soap deposits, mineral deposits and other nasties before they have a chance to become ingrained.

We’re not suggesting you need to clean your glass shower screens every few days. Every two weeks or even once a month should do for most bathrooms.

4. Use a squeegee and rinse

When you’ve forked out money for a new shower screen, purchasing and using a squeegee on the inside of the glass after each shower makes sense. It will dry – or at least mostly dry – the glass surfaces that get wet and remove mineral deposits left by the water.

In the same way, if you really like to lather up in the shower and there’s soap everywhere at the end, give your shower a rinse before you get out. By rinsing and then using the squeegee, you’ll prevent most soap and mineral deposits from taking hold and will make cleaning your glass even easier.

5. Don’t use abrasive products.

Only use soft cloths to clean your shower, with possibly a soft brush to help get into hard-to-reach places. Never, ever use rough brushes or scouring pads.

While they may get rid of soap, mould and other deposits, they can scratch your glass. And that’s the last thing you want when you have a new shower screen.
